Celtic star Jeremie Frimpong has disclosed that he is keen to play in the group stages of the Europa League after missing out on them last season, the Herald reports.
Last season Frimpong didn’t make the squad list for the group stages. He had not broken into the Hoops first-team when the list was announced.
Missed out on now legendary win
As a result, he missed out on some big nights for Celtic, including missing out on a bit of football history as Celtic won in Italy for the first time ever, beating Lazio 2-1.
Frimpong was included in the squad for the latter stages of the Europa League. He featured in the last 32 game against Copenhagen. Still, he doesn’t want to miss out any games of the magnitude of the Lazio one again.
Now he has the chance to feature in the group stages, provided that Celtic can defeat FK Sarajevo in Thursday’s play-off fixture.
“Love to be in the group stages”
“I would really love to be in the group stages” Frimpong said, as quoted by the Herald.
“Last season, I was watching the Europa League group stages and just to be in it would be amazing. I’d really like it. I didn’t go to Italy for the Lazio game, but I remember the goal that Olivier (Ntcham) scored in the last minute and I went to Rennes” he concluded.
Should the Hoops reach the group stages, there is no chance that Frimpong will miss out this time. He was key for Celtic in the recent win over Riga, turning in a man of the match performance.
It was understandable why Frimpong didn’t feature for Celtic in the group stages last season. After all, he hadn’t become a first-team regular as yet. When he signed for Celtic, few probably thought he’d make the breakthrough into the side so soon.
However, he has, and when on form he is one of Celtic’s best players. Hopefully he gets the chance to show that in the Europa League group stages.
