Celtic starlet Jonathan Afolabi has picked up an injury at just the wrong time. The player, who arrived at the Hoops in the summer after leaving Southampton, will miss Ireland’s under 21 European Championship qualifiers against Italy and Iceland.

Irish football website the 42 disclosed that the player had been suffering with a hamstring issue, and now he is out of the double header.

Afolabi himself is upset to miss out on the games, as he revealed on his Instagram account.

“Gutted to be missing these games through injury” he said.

The timing could also be bad for his Celtic prospects. The player has just been establishing himself in the Hoops reserve side.

However, should he be out of action for any length of time, his progress could be delayed.

The fact that Afolabi is the only striker Celtic signed in the summer could be a good thing for the player, though. Should he impress in the reserves, he does have a chance of making a breakthrough into the Hoops first-team this season.

That is why the injury will be frustrating to the player. Hopefully it is not a long-term issue, and he will be available for the Hoops sooner rather than later.

For now though, the player will have to focus on recovering from this setback. Neil Lennon and the rest of the staff at Celtic will be hoping that the issue isn’t a serious one.
