Celtic youngster Jonathan Afolabi’s injury may have cost him his chance to shine for the Republic of Ireland under 21s, but his spirits haven’t been dampened.
The striker was due to face Italy and Iceland for the 21s respectively. However, he hasn’t been able to take part thanks to a knock that he had previously confirmed on Instagram.

Afolabi has yet to make a senior appearance for Celtic or Ireland. However, he recently got off the mark for Celtic’s development side against Morton a couple of weeks ago.
But the striker hasn’t let the injury get him down. Afolabi posted on Instagram yesterday just days after picking up his knock.

No confirmation of a comeback date, but Afolabi has the right mentality
Unfortunately, the images posted were snapped before the injury. It’s unclear as to whether Afolabi has trained since the knock, but these images suggest perhaps not.
But it’s good to see how involved and enthusiastic he is about the squad regardless. He knows that if Ireland can get a positive result on Tuesday night, it could help his chances of playing in a European Championship with his country at under-21 level.

As for his Celtic career, it certainly looks promising for the youngster. When he signed, Neil Lennon said that he was on the fringes of the first-team (Sky Sports). And despite the fact he was deemed most suitable for the development squad, he’s clearly well-liked at Parkhead.
It’s still very early days for Afolabi at Parkhead. It’s a shame we didn’t get the chance to see how he performed at international level, but he’ll hopefully get his chance next month when they face both Armenia and Sweden respectively.
In the meantime, he needs to continue his Celtic development and not let the injury knock get to him.
Just a glance at his social media pages, however, shows that we probably don’t have anything to worry about in that regard.
