Celtic’s Maria McAneny has been awarded the Guinness World Record for scoring the fastest goal in women’s football against Hibs.

The extraordinary strike straight from kick-off went viral in December as the Hoops secured a crucial 2-1 win at the defending SWPL champions.

The goal clocked in at just 4.1 seconds, now officially the fastest in a professional women’s game. The 21-year-old academy graduate has an impressive 13 goals this season, but only one set a world record.

McAneny was joined by her Celtic teammates to be presented with the award on Thursday.

Asked by Sky Sports what it’s like to be a Guinness World Record holder, McAneny said: “I honestly don’t even know what to say right now. It’s not really set in.

“I don’t really know what to say, it’s a weird feeling.

“In the pictures where I score, I don’t even really remember celebrating, because the first thing that was on my mind was, ‘we’ve still got 89 minutes to play!’

“I’ve not [done anything like that before.] I think that will probably be the first and last. But you know, it counted when it matters.

“I don’t think [I’ll be trying it again.] We played Hibs in the following game after Christmas, and the goalie was well and truly standing on her line, there was a bit of banter. But that will be it now.”

McAneny also revealed that she didn’t plan or practice for the action, instead just attempting it as a “spur-of-the-moment thing.”

In an excellent season on the left flank, she has played every league game for the Celts this season, made her international breakthrough and scored her first Scotland goal at Hampden earlier this month.

Celtic thank Elena Sadiku.

The game in which the record-breaking goal was scored was Elena Sadiku’s last in charge before her move to manage BK Hacken in her native Sweden.

She was ironically replaced by the man in the opposite dugout that day, Grant Scott.
