Celtic’s reported £15m Tom Rogic valuation shows intent

Celtic’s reported £15m valuation for Tom Rogic is yet another boost for the supporters.

By now, we’ve all heard about the apparent interest from Zenit in the Wizard of Oz (The Herald). But, according to the Evening Times, the £9m fee that Zenit are planning wouldn’t be anywhere near enough to speak to Rogic.

Instead, Celtic are apparently looking to get closer to £15m for their treble-treble winning star. That’s despite the fact that Rogic certainly didn’t have one of his best campaigns last season. He managed 35 appearances in total, but only managed five goals and four assists.

It was hardly a vintage campaign, but Celtic still see the value Rogic can have in the side when they get him match-fit. That’s what likely brings about the £15m valuation – we know how good Rogic can be.

But what makes this good news for supporters is that it’s yet further proof that Celtic are refusing to be lowballed anymore.

The Hoops are reportedly wanting £25m for Kieran Tierney (Daily Mail). They’ve also refused to even entertain anything for Callum McGregor (Daily Record). Added to that, the out-of-sorts Olivier Ntcham would still reportedly cost £10m if someone wants to take him from Glasgow (Football Scotland).

All of our stars are now being touted for eight-figure sums, and substantial eight-figure sums at that. That’s not even just for the top performers anymore either.

It’s difficult to really pinpoint what’s brought about this new, bullish approach to negotiations from the Hoops. The inflated bubble of the Premier League, as well as the money going about Continental Europe, doesn’t look like decreasing. Instead, Celtic appear to be trying to keep up with their player sales by demanding high values that rival what other similar sized clubs are looking for.

It’s the kind of approach that sees the likes of Porto and Benfica rake in millions for their star players. If Celtic aspire to be similar to those clubs in Europe, then we have to start acting like it in the market. Evidently, the club can now afford to, and that’s being shown through their reported transfer demands.

In saying that, no club wants to lose their top players. But at the end of the day, everyone at Parkhead has a price. That includes Rogic, Tierney, and McGregor.

For us supporters, however, we can be delighted that the club is finally starting to get aggressive in the market. In the long-run, we’ll start to see some real benefits from it too.
