Celtic’s chances of landing Romaine Sawyers could be boosted if Brentford sign Celta Vigo midfielder Mathias Jensen.
Jenson plays in the same position as Sawyers, and according to the Evening Standard, Brentford are closing in on a £3.5million deal for the Celta Vigo man.
The Evening Standard states that Brentford are now in advanced talks to sign the midfielder. Splashing that kind of cash if they planned to keep Sawyers doesn’t seem likely. And with Celtic still reportedly in the hunt for him, it may just boost our chances.
So far, there’s been nothing further from Celtic since the £1.5million offer for him was rejected (Daily Mail). Rumours have been going around of a potential £2.5m bid for him (Daily Record), but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
One train of thought could be that Brentford don’t want to let their star-man go without a replacement being signed. Therefore if the deal for Jensen goes through, it could be an easier deal to get done for the Hoops.
Mathias Jensen could pave the way for Sawyers to Celtic
The Sawyers deal still seems like the natural move for Celtic after the collapse of the David Turnbull deal. It’s clear that Neil Lennon still fancies another number 10 in, and Sawyers seems to be the man he wants.
It won’t harm the likes of Olivier Ntcham, however. Both he and Sawyers are two totally different types of midfielders. Sawyers is more attack-minded, and his main competition would be Tom Rogic and Ryan Christie. Given the pair’s injury problems in the past, a third number 10 is worth bringing in.
Brentford haven’t come out and stated that Jensen is a direct replacement. But it’s a lot of money to spend on a back-up player, and Sawyers most certainly wouldn’t just be dropped for him given his importance to the Brentford team.
It reads as though the English club are getting ready to lose their man. Whenever that second official bid from Celtic comes in, don’t be surprised if it gets accepted should the Jensen deal go through.
With plenty of plates spinning at Parkhead, it feels as though that fourth new signing is imminent. Whether it be Sawyers or a new right-back, Lennon is clearly looking for several more additions.
