Scott Bain has made the startling admission that he had to convince himself that he belongs in the Celtic first-team after he recently returned to the starting line-up, the Celtic View reports.
Bain has disclosed that he had to make himself feel confident before he made his return to the Celtic side against Aberdeen.
“Give myself the confidence”
“First and foremost, again because it’d been a while since I’d played, I had to sit down with myself and give myself the confidence to convince myself that I deserve to be here, that I’m good enough to be here, and that I could go out there and do myself justice – which in turn can obviously help the team” Bain said, as quoted in the Celtic View (Volume 56, Issue 15, Page. 21).
That is certainly an interesting look into how a player prepares for a game. It is intriguing that Bain seemed to lack confidence of some kind in himself, even though he has won a domestic treble with Celtic.
However, that motivation seems to have worked for the 28-year-old. He has performed well in his return to the Celtic side. Neil Lennon must believe in Bain as well, as he has moved him up from third choice goalkeeper last season to first choice.
However, his description of his pre-match routine was startling. You don’t often hear about the struggles that successful football players go through when it comes to getting prepared for a match.
Deserves credit for talking about preparations
Bain deserves credit for having the guts to talk about such a situation. The goalkeeper’s probable next test will be against will be against Sparta Prague this evening.
Neil Lennon has kept faith in Bain the last few games, that doesn’t seem likely to change between now and the international break.
Hopefully Bain has now got his confidence back, and no longer has to convince himself that he belongs in the Celtic first-team.
His recent performances have shown that he does.
