The time is nearing for Celtic to make their move for £12million man Patrick Roberts.

The Englishman signed for Manchester City for the massive fee back in 2015 from Fulham. Despite being contracted to the club for three-and-a-half years now, he’s still yet to appear for the first-team.

Two-and-a-half years at Celtic ended in the summer with Roberts making a huge impression. He made 79 appearances in the green-and-white, bagging 18 goals and showing an array of tricks.

Now, he’s on loan at Girona and preparing to cut ties with Manchester City in the summer. This, therefore, is going to be Celtic’s best time to strike for the 21-year-old English starlet.

So far this season, Roberts has finally bullied his way into the Girona starting XI. He’s yet to score a goal for his new club, but has made nine appearances and is starting to make an impression.

Interest could be hot

The likes of Leicester City are still interested in taking Roberts in the summer. You wouldn’t be surprised if several other Premiership or even Spanish clubs started eyeing him up come the end of the season.

Roberts is going to be into the final year of his contract come the summer. With Manchester City motoring under Pep Guardiola, it’s safe to say Roberts’ future at the Etihad is now non-existent.

Brendan Rodgers stated in the summer that the door was open for Roberts to return for a third Celtic spell.

Despite the sensational form of James Forrest this season, fans would love a Roberts return. He adds another element of flair to Celtic’s game, and would give them genuine strength in depth down the right flank.

Roberts loved his time in Glasgow, but the big question will be whether he still fancies it after his time in Spain. A successful year at Girona could increase interest tenfold.

Regardless, the time is coming for Celtic to strike. A year left on the contract this summer and eyeing a move away. It’s time for Rodgers to prepare his pitch.
