Celtic will be playing to return to the top of the Scottish Premiership against Livingston on Sunday after another afternoon of drama in the top flight.
It’s well-acknowledged that the Bhoys can’t be relying on favours from other teams in the Premiership when it comes to taking points off of Rangers.
That transpired to be a sensible point of view again after today’s action with Philippe Clement’s side beating Hibernian 3-1 at Ibrox.
James Tavernier netted for the home side before Myziane Maolida stunned everyone with an equaliser in first-half stoppage time.
However, Cyriel Dessers restored Rangers’ lead before the interval and Hibs couldn’t find a way back into the match in the second half. Rabbi Matondo then netted late on to prevent any late excitement.
Saturday’s Scottish Premiership results
Elsewhere, Aberdeen picked up a much-needed 2-1 victory over Ross County at Pittodrie, easing their relegation worries with goals from Bojan Miovski and Jamie McGrath.
Dundee boosted their chances of a top-six finish with a 2-1 win at McDiarmid Park against St Johnstone.
Hearts’ match with Kilmarnock ended in a 1-1 draw, as did the game between Motherwell & St Mirren.
Celtic now sit two points behind the league leaders and can move one point ahead once again with a win over Livingston in West Lothian tomorrow, albeit having played a game more.
Goal difference could be a factor in Celtic vs Rangers title race
With the situation so tight at the top of the table, goal difference could end up being a pivotal metric in deciding who lifts the silverware at the top of the table.
If the two teams are tied on points after 38 matches then the league winners will be determined by outright goal difference. If that is level, too, it comes down to goals scored.
Currently, Celtic have a goal difference of +48, while Rangers sit on +50 after today’s result.
It’s imperative then that the Bhoys not only push to pick up points against Livingston but try to do so in style.
Celtic have beaten David Martindale’s side 3-0 at Almondvale already this season and that kind of result would send a big message ahead of next week’s crucial derby.
Winning by any means necessary is the task – but every goal may well count.
