It’s time to look at the latest team who could be in the way of Celtic this summer. The Hoops are seeded for all four rounds of Champions League qualification but that doesn’t save us from the possibility of a cruel opener.
We’re previewing all of our potential opponents and today it’s the turn of the champions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
FK Sarajevo
Fudbalski Klub Sarajevo are the four time champions of the Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They netted their latest triumph by five points – taking a total of 70 points from 33 matches.
Sarajevo had a mixed run of it in the Europa League this season. They defeated Armenian side Banants 5-1 on aggregate in the first round of qualifiers and also got a very credible 2-2 draw away to Serie A side Atalanta in the next round. Unfortunately for Sarajevo their fairytale ended there as they were humiliated 8-0 against the Italians on home soil in the second leg.
The previous season they were knocked out in the opening round by the Moldovans Zaria Balti.
A road less travelled
Celtic have never faced opposition from Bosnia and Herzegovina so this coming season could be a first. Sarajevo’s squad is made up mainly of home nationals but there are also Serbians and Croatians involved. Their captain is 12 time Macedonian cap Krste Velkoski.
Sarajevo would offer an element of unknown to proceedings for Celtic. They clearly have decent European pedigree given their first leg result against Atalanta. However, Celtic shouldn’t really fear anything they’ve got to offer.
