Change to the classic Celtic hoops on Sunday, as charity wing promote Christmas appeal

The Celtic FC Foundation have made a change to Celtic’s famous Green and White Hoops for this Sunday’s home match.

Against St. Johnstone, the Hoops will carry the graphic for the Celtic Foundation’s Christmas Appeal instead of the current sponsors, with shirts to be subsequently auctioned.

The Foundation tend to go big at Christmas, and even without fans at Celtic Park, this year is no different.

Statement of intent

On an announcement made through the Foundation’s website, the charity wing said:

“Ordinarily as part of the Appeal, the Foundation would also host a bucket collection at Celtic Park in the lead-up to a home match. Unfortunately, with fans currently unable to attend, this won’t be possible this year.”

The annual Christmas bucket collection has gone online this year, with Celtic fans encouraged to donate as they would outside Celtic Park. It’s a sad fact that supporters won’t be able to get into the stadium to enjoy the Foundation’s efforts.

The Foundation continued:

“As the crippling effects of the pandemic have added unbearably to the pressures on so many, the assistance provided by Celtic FC Foundation to those who are most vulnerable is now more crucial than ever before.

“We also want to support pensioners on our doorstep, by lending a hand at a difficult time of year. Local charities need our help too. We can make a massive difference to the lives of children, the homeless, refugees and those who are in need, facing a range of other challenges.”

A break from tradition

Previous campaigns, such as Walfrid’s Wish, have raised thousands of pounds for vulnerable people. This year’s focus is on supporters affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic, and its crippling economic consequences.

Food bank use is projected to see a 61% increase this winter, according to The Trussell Trust.

Once again, we applaud Tony Hamilton and the Celtic FC Foundation, who continue to innovate in their fundraising efforts. For many supporters, the Foundation’s logo would be a welcome permanent addition to the famous Hoops.
