Former Celtic star Charlie Mulgrew was back at Lennoxtown this week as he begins his coaching journey.

The ex-Scotland international announced his retirement from football a month ago at the age of 37. Mulgrew has made no secret about his intentions to get into the coaching side of things, and he’s wasted no time in learning from the best manager in Scotland.

While the reason for the visit was pretty clear almost immediately, Mulgrew has offered some insight into his trip alongside plenty of praise for Rodgers.

“An invaluable couple of days, learning from one of the best,” he wrote on Tuesday. (charlie_mulgrew on Instagram)

“Massive thanks to Brendan Rodgers for allowing me to watch him and his staff work, in the lead-up to their Champions League game against Lazio.

“Very thorough in their preparations leaving no stone unturned. Good luck tomorrow night Celtic.”

Mulgrew is likely to have learned a fair bit from his return to Lennoxtown. Seeing someone like Rodgers up close with his players would be good at any stage. But ahead of a huge Champions League clash, things would be ramped up further.

Mulgrew was actually a player under Rodgers for a very short time in 2016. However, he soon departed for Blackburn Rovers and didn’t play any part in our Invincible campaign.

It is great to see him wanting to make an impression as a coach or manager. Listening to him speak on outlets like Open Goal, it is very clear that his teams will play in an attacking, possession-based manner. More coaches like that in Scotland can only be a good thing.

Rodgers is always helpful to these young guys — something we heard from Stuart Kettlewell last week. Let’s hope Mulgrew can make a similar impact to the Motherwell boss.
