Charlie Nicholas praises Celtic for once; claims to be 'envious' of team's success
Charlie Nicholas has praised Celtic for once after the Hoops reached the Scottish Cup Final, the Scottish Daily Express reports.
It wasn’t that long ago that Nicholas was called out by Celtic boss Neil Lennon in the Daily Record for his critical remarks about the signing of Diego Laxalt.
Now Nicholas seems to have changed his tune to an extent, and is full of praise for the consistency shown by Celtic in having the chance to win 12 domestic trophies in a row.
“There is no jealousy”
“I have said many times how envious I am of this team. There is no jealousy but there is envy” Nicholas said, in his Scottish Daily Express column (Print edition, 3/11/20, page. 55).
“Envy is something you would have loved to have done but never achieved it. What they have achieved is quite incredible. Their domestic record is remarkable” Nicholas concluded.
It is good to see Nicholas saying something sensible for once. His remarks about Laxalt have turned out to be incorrect, as he has been brilliant for Celtic since joining the club.
It is a bit odd to talk about how envious you are of your old team’s success though. You just couldn’t see Chris Sutton, for example, coming out and saying ‘I am envious of how well Celtic have done recently’.
Didn’t criticise Hoops for once
Still, that is Nicholas. At least he isn’t coming out with bizarre criticisms for once. No doubt those will return as soon as the Hoops drop points again.
One wonders if Neil Lennon will have a look at Nicholas’ column this week. If he does, he will probably allow himself a wry smile at the comments made by the former Celtic striker, as even he can’t put a dampener on Celtic’s run of success.
He won’t be fooled though. He will know that sooner rather than later Nicholas will be back criticising Celtic for some unfathomable reason.
