Former Celtic legend Charlie Nicholas feels that Celtic cannot declare themselves nine in a row champions until the league is completed, Sky Sports reports.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon claimed, as reported by the Daily Record, that if the season cannot be re-started due to the global virus pandemic then the Hoops should be named champions.
Nicholas thinks that the Hoops will win the title, but feels that the league must be completed.
“It has to be completed”
“Just like England, it has to be completed. Celtic will win nine in a row. It’s so intriguing for that…Celtic will win this ninth title, then they’ll go for 10, so the season has to be completed” Nicholas said, whilst appearing on Sky Sports.
“If that’s a delay that take us into the early part of next season, and we have to the cancel the league cup…we will have to do that. Celtic will want to win the title. Celtic have to earn the right to do that, and they will” he concluded.
It will be interesting to see what Celtic fans make of Nicholas’ comments. On the one hand, he is correct about wanting the league to be completed.
Peter Lawwell stated in his recent message to the Hoops support that he wants to see the league completed. However, can’t it also be argued that if no more games can be played, the Hoops have ‘earned the right’ to be champions as the team have a 13 point lead?
No stopping debate until decision is made
There won’t be any stopping in the debate over the title until the season is either cancelled or return date is set. In fact, should the league be cancelled there will be debate about keeping the standings or declaring the season null and void.
Hopefully the season can get going again sooner rather than later, if anything to end the constant debate about the merits of Celtic being named as champions.
Should the league re-start, the Hoops can do the talking on the pitch, and clinch nine in a row.
