Charlton boss Lee Bowyer "confident" about keeping Celtic target Alfie Doughty; says another club is interested
Charlton boss Lee Bowyer remains confident about keeping winger Alfie Doughty today, but revealed that another club is interested in the Celtic target.
Doughty has been the subject of a couple of offers over the summer from the Hoops. However, Bowyer has disclosed a fresh one that was made and rejected by the League One side last week (London News Online).
Celtic are in the market for another left-sided wing-back, with Neil Lennon admitting over the weekend that it remains the club’s priority area in which to strengthen before midnight tonight. As quoted by the Scottish Sun on Saturday, Lennon said: “We are working feverishly in the background, and we do need support on the left-side. It’s the one area we do need to strengthen.”
But it’s looking less and less likely that the player brought in will be Charlton’s Doughty. Bowyer has been resolute in his determination to keep the English youngster at the Addicks, and that hasn’t changed as deadline day rolls on.
As quoted by London News Online, Bowyer said: “They (Celtic) made another offer last week as far as I’m aware. I don’t know if it was verbal or actually on paper. But it wasn’t enough, whatever it was. Yeah, yeah I’m confident [of Doughty staying] unless Celtic come back with an offer which would interest us. I think Alfie is going to stay.
“There is a club that is interested in this country as well. And it works the same way – what are they prepared to pay? If it’s right we’ll consider it. But we don’t want to sell Alfie, of course we don’t. In an ideal world Alfie signs the contract and keeps progressing.
“He ain’t the finished article, for sure. In my eyes he should stay, sign his contract and crack on.”
No reason for Celtic to panic here
It’s interesting that Bowyer states that another club is interested in Doughty’s services yet doesn’t mention them. Especially considering he’s been so outspoken when it comes to Celtic’s approach to negotiations.
It could be the case that the Charlton boss is just trying to drum up the value for Doughty. If Celtic are made to believe that another club could swoop in, then naturally it could make us panic and attempt to really go for it.
But Peter Lawwell and Lennon won’t be worried. There are no signs as of yet that Doughty will be signing that new contract with the League One side. So long as he doesn’t, the Hoops would still be an extremely attractive proposition for him next summer.
As for the offer last week, it would be interesting to note how much it was. This isn’t a player Celtic are going to totally blow most of their budget on, especially considering Doughty only has 38 appearances in League One to his name (Transfermarkt).
Unsurprisingly, Bowyer remains resistant to the prospect of Charlton selling their hot young prospect. Today, we may just find out how determined Celtic are to take him away.
In other news, another unimpressive performance yesterday has these Celtic fans open to the prospect of selling a talented Rodgers signing.
