Charlton fans perplexed by the idea of Alfie Doughty moving to Celtic

Sections of the Charlton Athletic support bizarrely can’t understand why Alfie Doughty would potentially move to Celtic.

The Hoops have been credited with an interest in the winger, with Charlton boss Lee Bowyer claiming a bid from the Scottish champions has been rejected (London News Online).

This comes after a report in the Daily Record earlier this week claimed that Celtic had told the League One side to name their price for the winger.

Yet as we wait to see whether Celtic go back in for the Charlton man, some in their support have reacted angrily, surprised, and disappointed at the potential sale. Here’s a look at what some of the Addicks fans are saying:

Charlton or Celtic? Would you really need to think?

It’s always amusing to see English supporters who believe that simply being south of the border is a better career opportunity than playing for Celtic.

It’s not as if the Hoops are ever in Europe, play for titles, breed winning mentalities, or are one of the biggest clubs in the world. Scratch that actually – Celtic tick all of those boxes.

Even Charlton’s own manager Bowyer stated that he likely wouldn’t get game-time at Parkhead if he moved. When he spoke to London News Online, the Addicks boss said: “If he goes somewhere now, the likelihood is he isn’t going to play”. If that isn’t an indication of the step-up then goodness knows what is.

But regardless of what certain Charlton and English fans think, all of the right people will know this is a huge level up in class for Doughty if he makes the switch. His manager, his advisors, and most importantly of all the player himself will recognise what kind of opportunity he would have at Celtic Park.

For now it’s all up in the air, and taking into account Doughty’s inexperience with just 41 senior appearances to his name (Transfermarkt), he would likely only be considered as one for the future in any case.

But would Parkhead be a step-up from his current venue? We’re not even going to insult your intelligence by answering.

In other news, an Aberdeen star has admitted that he looks up to Celtic rival Ryan Christie.
