Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes that the club should offer Odsonne Edouard a new contract to ensure that he stays for potentially winning 10 in a row, reports the Daily Record.
Sutton thinks that the club should give Edouard a new deal on vastly improved terms to ensure that he is going to be at the club for such an important season.
“Rip his current contract to bits”
“If the club do manage to win a ninth-straight title and then have the cherished tenth to shoot for next term, surely Celtic should rip his current contract to bits, offer him virtually whatever he wants and plead with him to give them one more year in an attempt to make history” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Whilst Sutton’s idea is a good one in practice, it seems unlikely that it is something that Celtic will go through with.
It is obvious to point out that the Bhoys’ chances of winning 10 in a row will be vastly improved if Edouard is still at the club.
However, it is probably not the best idea to offer the player ‘virtually whatever he wants’ as Sutton calls it. That does not mean that Celtic shouldn’t offer the player a new contract.
Must be realism about terms player can be offered
In fact, Peter Lawwell and the board should be preparing a new deal for the player as soon as possible. You have to be realistic about what you offer a player though.
For example, it might be too much of a risk to make the striker the highest paid player at the club, that could upset some other players that are currently at Celtic.
However, the Hoops should still attempt to get Edouard to sign a new deal, as it would be a huge boost for the rest of the season.
