BT Sport punditry rivals Chris Sutton and Alex Rae have been involved in another exchange centering around Sunday’s Glasgow derby.

Sutton has been extremely vocal in his thoughts regarding Alfredo Morelos’ gesture to our supporters. The throat-slitting sign has extremely volatile connotations, and big Chris said in his Daily Record column that the striker should be punished heavily for it.

Rae and Sutton have also had an exchange regarding Steven Gerrard’s post-match celebrations on Sunday on Twitter. Now, the subject of Morelos has made its way to the platform.

Here’s a look at their most recent exchange below as Sutton looked to defend his Morelos comments:

Intent shouldn’t matter

Funny how Rae doesn’t actually respond as to why he thinks Morelos should be let off the hook. The fact is that it doesn’t matter what Morelos thinks it meant, it’s simply not the kind of gesture you should be able to make in Scottish football. This isn’t Colombia, regardless of how much Rangers fans seem to want it to be.

It’s at the stage now where Morelos could physically attack someone and we would just be told that it means something different in Colombia. The desperation to defend him from the Ibrox hordes is tiresome. They simply can’t admit he’s a loose cannon.

Rae’s “meltdown” comment is another tiresome phrase that’s been finding its way onto social media in recent days. Sutton and just about everyone else has admitted that Rangers were the better team and deserved the points. It’s hardly a meltdown if you’re happy to accept you were beaten by the better side on the day.

It’s not as if we tried to moan about missing a lot of chances, or that we blamed the team selection for the defeat. We’ll leave that to the other side. But it’s more than fair to say that the Rangers players’ celebrations at times were….a tad odd.

Sutton has his view, and he’s entitled to it. Labeling it a meltdown and trying to dismiss it because he’s a Celtic man is typical of the mentality across the city.

The fact Morelos hasn’t scored against us continues to eat into the Rangers fans. They’re itching for it, so it’s no surprise to see them defend this gesture. It’s the closest thing they’ll get to him celebrating anything against us.
