Chris Sutton can’t help himself with a brutal Rangers dig after Kilmarnock’s approach against Celtic

That was a pretty exhausting game for Celtic on Sunday at Kilmarnock.

Stuart Kettlewell’s side had drawn their opening four Premiership matches before Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic came to town.

Understandably so, Kilmarnock’s approach was to frustrate Celtic and put the ball in the final third as quickly as possible, as it seemed as though they would have been happy with a point.

But after Daizen Maeda opened the scoring, Killie equalised with seven minutes left on the clock, and how they approached the match caught the eye of Chris Sutton, and he couldn’t help but throw sly digs at Rangers whilst sharing his views.

Chris Sutton on how opposition teams approach Celtic and Rangers games

Credit to Kilmarnock, they didn’t sit back, and they got in the faces of Celtic after scoring, including forcing several corners, before Kelechi Iheanacho’s stoppage-time penalty won the game for the visitors.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football (14/09/25), Sutton thinks teams are changing their approaches when facing Celtic and Rangers now.

The former striker had a sly dig at Rangers by stating that when Rangers were good, ‘many years ago’, teams would sit back on them.

“What was also encouraging from Kilmarnock’s perspective, once they got level,” said Sutton. “You see a lot of teams, playing Celtic or Rangers, many years ago, when they were good, sort of, dropping onto the edge of their box and hanging onto things.

“But they really went for it. Unlucky. Other corners went in, and unlucky not to get on the end of a few.”

New title challengers for Celtic?

Even though Celtic slowed down during the second half of last season, they still won the title by 17 points, and it seems as though it could be a comfortable run to title number 56 this term.

Rangers are hovering above the relegation zone and are nine points behind Celtic, so it’s clear they won’t even be challenging the champions of Scotland.

But perhaps, that challenge could come in the form of Derek McInnes’ Hearts, who have made an unbeaten start to the new season, have had new investment pumped into them and aren’t in Europe.
