Chris Sutton has laid the blame for Celtic’s Champions League exit firmly at the Hoops board. Celtic lost 4-3 to Cluj on a dreadful night at Celtic Park to lose 5-4 on aggregate before the group stages.
Following the game, Sutton took to social media to criticise the Hoops board.
“The Tierney money gone”
“That’s the Tierney money gone tonight, the messing about in the last few windows has bitten Celtic on the backside. This day was always coming” he said.

Is Sutton correct to lay the blame at the Hoops board? Partly. There is no doubt that the men in charge of Celtic could have done better when it comes to new signings.
The situation at both full-back positions could have been handed far better than it has been. However, it has to be said that the board aren’t entirely to blame for the exit.
Manager also has to take some blame
Neil Lennon has to take a share of the blame as well for making selection and tactical errors on the night against Cluj.
Those mistakes will not be quickly forgotten about by the Celtic support. However, the board will also take the blame for how the signing strategy has gone so far this season.
Both Lennon and the Celtic board will need to respond to this in the next few weeks. Some new signings and good performances could help fans get over the loss to Cluj. It could take a while though.
