Chris Sutton demands Celtic action from Michael Nicholson and company

Chris Sutton has called on Michael Nicholson and the Celtic board to heavily back Ange Postecoglou in the upcoming January transfer window.

There are already multiple reports linking the Bhoys with players such as Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda, suggesting Celtic are active in the market ahead of the window opening.

However, Postecoglou remains coy about any potential business and this week has urged the club to further strengthen the squad in 2022.

Whether the board need that kind of reminder is anyone’s guess. They did provide a significant transfer outlay over the summer and were reportedly hands-on in supporting Postecoglou, but there’s no doubt more needs to be done.

And Sutton thinks the board must have seen enough from the Celtic boss so far to suggest they should heavily weigh in after the new year.

Writing in his Daily Record column this weekend, the former Hoops striker said: “Dropping down to the Europa Conference League is hardly a disaster. It’s more like job done when you consider the state the side was in during the summer and the sheer amount of players who came in.
It’s also pretty clear there is still work to do. The Celtic board should have seen enough to know the club is in safe hands with Postecoglou.

“The pressure was too much for them to hang on versus Bayer Leverkusen and they didn’t have the reinforcements to see it out. That is why January is so important to Celtic. It’s massive.

“Postecoglou has done enough to earn the trust of the club – and he simply must be allowed to strengthen. He needs to hang on until the winter break, get through this period on the coattails of Rangers going into the Old Firm game.

“There could be a trophy in the cabinet by that stage and what a boost that would be going into the second half of the season. Celtic are going in the right direction under Postecoglou but it will be the transfer window that will determine how fast he gets to the desired destination.”

Many Celtic supporters will agree with these comments. It’s better these kinds of demands and comments are made ahead of a transfer window in anticipation, rather than the criticism coming in February.

Nicholson, Dermot Desmond and the rest of the Celtic board would do well to heed the comments and ensure that Postecoglou gets what he wants when the market opens.

With Champions League cash and multiple trophies on the line, they can’t get this one wrong.

In other news, Michael Stewart is often spot on about Celtic but today he got it badly wrong.
