Chris Sutton says it’s ‘boring’ talking about Celtic amid their lack of preparation.

The appointment of Martin O’Neill’s backroom staff wasn’t confirmed until the day pre-season began, and Celtic are still yet to make a single summer signing as a massive rebuild beckons.

It’s all too familiar a story to Hoops fans and pundits such as Sutton, who saw how everything unravelled after a dreadful window last summer.

Speaking before the staff were confirmed, Sutton said that the club’s present uncertainty makes them a ‘mess’.

Chris Sutton ‘doesn’t understand what’s going on at Celtic’

Sutton said on The Warm-Up: “I’m like every other Celtic fan in the world. I keep waking up and thinking it’s going to be Christmas Day, and it’s Groundhog Day.

“And nothing happens. Actually, it’s boring. Really boring talking about Celtic.

“It’s not only boring — it’s concerning. It’s really worrying.

“Let’s just wait and see. Maybe there’s this masterplan; something going on behind the scenes where Celtic are going to explode into life, sign all these top quality players, get off to a flier into the Champions League, and keep a hold of Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels and Alistair Johnston…

“But no, I think the uncertainty… It’s just a mess, isn’t it? It’s just a mess.

“I don’t understand what’s going on. It’s last summer: prepare to fail, fail to prepare. It happened, and Celtic scrambled and got the double, brilliant. Genuinely brilliant, really exciting, the way the season ended.

“But it’s like there isn’t a plan. Who’s making the decisions? Well, we’ve all got a good idea who’s making the big calls, but nothing is getting done.

“So it actually is boring talking about Celtic.”

Midfielders expected to leave Celtic this summer

The area requiring the most work this summer is undoubtedly Celtic’s midfield.

After serious interest in January, Arne Engels is now expected to leave Celtic, with a host of European clubs chasing the 22-year-old.

Reo Hatate was left out of the matchday squad for the final two games of the season, with the writing seemingly on the wall regarding his future. Paulo Bernardo is also completely out of favour.

A stellar debut season by Benjamin Nygren is also generating interest, and a rapid exit hasn’t been ruled out for the Hoops’ top scorer.

Even captain Callum McGregor hasn’t ruled out an exit, whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract is now up.
