Celtic legend Chris Sutton has been impressed with how Leigh Griffiths has performed in his return to the Hoops first-team.
After rarely featuring in the first-half of the season, Griffiths played in the first two games after the winter break and scored two goals.
He might not have found the back of the net in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Ross County, but the fact that he was chosen as the lone striker at the start of the game is proof that the Hoops boss believes in him.
Sutton believes that Griffiths’ performances have proved that Neil Lennon was correct to keep faith in the player, that he would be able to recover his form.
“He has not returned to the Celtic team out of the goodness of Neil Lennon’s heart” Sutton said, writing in his column in the Daily Record.
“His manager has seen something”
“Griffiths is there because his manager has seen something he has liked in recent weeks and believes he can do a job for his team. He’s proved Lennon right this week” he continued.
“There were promising signs in his partnership with Odsonne Edouard and when you add Patryk Klimala in to the mix, Lennon now has options when it comes to selection and formation.”
Griffiths’ return to form should end any speculation about his future at the club. As long as he scores goals, he will be selected for the first-team.
Forward must have performed well in Dubai
Sutton is correct to identify the work Griffiths has been doing in recent weeks. The striker must have been very impressive in his performances during the Hoops’ winter break training week in Dubai.
A lot of time must have been spent working on the Edouard-Griffiths partnership, and so far it has paid off for the Hoops.
Celtic now seem to have no need to sign another striker in the January window, so well has Griffiths performed. If he had returned to the side and not contributed, then it would have been an issue for the Hoops.
However, he has played very well since the winter break, and for the moment must be a first-pick going forward. No wonder Chris Sutton has been impressed.
