Chris Sutton leaves Callum McGregor out of combined Celtic-Rangers XI

Ahead of Celtic’s Betfred Cup final against Rangers on Sunday, former Hoops legend and BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton picked a combined XI of the two teams.

Sutton’s team is dominated by Celtic players, with eight compared to Rangers’ three. However, the former Hoops striker has sprung a surprise in the middle of the park. He has selected Rangers’ Ryan Jack over Celtic stalwart Callum McGregor.

Jack has had a decent season by his standards. However, McGregor has been one of the mainstays of the Celtic side that has won the last nine domestic trophies in a row.

When you take into account the sheer number of games that McGregor has played for club and country, it shows how important he is to the Hoops and Scotland. He is one of the few players that is never rested by Neil Lennon. If that doesn’t show how vital he is to the team then nothing will.

Hopefully McGregor sees Sutton’s combined XI and it spurs him on for the cup final. He has scored a few goals against Rangers in the past, maybe his next will come in the Betfred Cup Final.

Looking at Sutton’s combined XI overall, then he has selected the only two Rangers players who would get close to the Celtic team – Alfredo Morelos, and Borna Barisic. There is no guarantee that they would get into the starting line-up though.

The rest of Sutton’s team is dominated by the Celtic squad, as it should be in all honesty. The Hoops have won the last nine domestic trophies in a row, after all.

Celtic are the number one team in Scottish football, and Sutton’s combined XI reflects that. However, he still should have selected McGregor in his team. He is not only one of Celtic’s, but one of Scottish football’s best players.
