Chris Sutton left hugely concerned after latest Celtic injury blow
Celtic great Chris Sutton has been left hugely concerned after the injury blow to Carl Starfelt last week.
The Swedish international pulled up in his side’s 2-0 win in Slovenia on Thursday night. It’s a huge blow for the player given it appears the cause of his injury is a hamstring issue.
As things stand, there’s yet to be any clarity on how long the centre-back could be out for. A big concern for Celtic and Ange Postecoglou given how imperative he was in the title-winning campaign this season.
The Scottish Premiership campaign is due to kick-off at the end of July. However, it remains to be seen how much of pre-season the big defender will now miss. And Sutton believes it could lead to Celtic springing into life in the transfer market.
As quoted by the Daily Record, Sutton said: “Postecoglou must have spat out his pina colada when he heard the news. After a season of rotten luck on the injury front, his centre back suffering a bad on one international duty was another dose of serious misfortune. At least it’s June and the season is still almost two months away. But it would still be a major blow if the Swede was to miss the big kick-off and it might force Celtic to think about the transfer market.
“I’ve got a lot of admiration for Starfelt for the way he overcame adversity in Scotland. It was a really tough start and he took a lot of flak for some early howlers, with a lot of supporters writing him off completely. That was always unfair. He arrived fairly late was pitched straight in to a new look side and a defence that was trying to find its feet.
“It took him time to settle but he grew stronger as the campaign wore on. By the end of the season no one could say he wasn’t a huge part of the title winning side. Starfelt won over the doubters and I’ll bet most of those same fans who were dismissing him last August are now hugely worried if his injury turns out to be long term. If he is ruled out for a sizeable chunk of time then Postecoglou might have to consider his options.”
Celtic defender Carl Starfelt’s return timeline yet to be revealed
There’s no real way to dress this one up. It’s certainly a huge blow and not something Ange will be taking lightly.
The big kick-off is already less than 2 months away, We’ve seen how damaging hamstring injuries can be in the past. It knocked Kyogo and David Turnbull out of the game for 3 months last season. If that was to be the case with Carl, he would definitely miss the beginning of the campaign.
There is a bit of leeway this summer given we aren’t involved in any UCL qualifiers. That’s a big boost for us and should allow some extra prep for the season without it being littered with competitive games.
However, that doesn’t mean Starfelt is going to be back from injury before then. Especially if it’s a tear he’s picked up. And make no mistake, being stretchered off isn’t exactly the greatest of looks. Celtic supporters have every right to be concerned.
Sure, it could lead to an opportunity for the likes of Christopher Jullien or Stephen Welsh to step-up in pre-season. But the more likely scenario is that we bring in another centre-back along with Cameron Carter-Vickers. That would make the most logical sense.
But it’s no wonder Sutton is concerned over this one. We all are. Hopefully his injury isn’t as bad as it looks.
