The best player at Celtic this season. And the best player in Scotland. Matt O’Riley is transforming into some player.
The 23-year-old showcased high-quality performances last season as Celtic went on and secured a Treble under Ange Postecoglou.
But the performances weren’t at the level he is hitting now because he has certainly gone up a level under Brendan Rodgers.
Chris Sutton highlighted how Matt O’Riley hardly misplaced a pass during the recent win over St Mirren, as he told Sky Sports Football (02/01/24 at 6:55 pm).
And how the £1.5 million capture from MK Dons has been an ’absolute bargain’.
Amid talk of Celtic needing to bulk the squad with proven talent in the January transfer window. Someone like Matt O’Riley is proving that’s not always the answer and those unknown gems are still out there.
When the awards are handed out at the end of the season, expect the Denmark international to be up there because he has been sensational. In 21 Scottish Premiership matches, he has 10 goals and seven assists, with the Bhoys proudly sitting top.
Matt O’Riley transfer
“I can’t remember O’Riley, other than that cross, misplacing a pass. His passing has been purposeful and on point,” said Sutton.
“He seems to be an absolute bargain from MK Dons.”

Matt O’Riley’s future
Celtic fans will breathe a sigh of relief that O’Riley only recently penned a new contract at the club, so there is no need to panic on that front.
That protects the club financially, but it doesn’t stop interested parties from knocking on the door and wanting to sign him.
There’s no way he leaves in January, the upcoming summer transfer window is the worrying one and a different matter altogether.
But the player himself is still tied down to a long-term deal. Plus, he isn’t saying anything that is worrying fans and, hopefully, another 100 appearances are to come.
