Chris Sutton makes statement that should appease unhappy Celtic support

It is fair to say that Celtic’s 4-3 defeat to Cluj and subsequent exit from the Champions League has not gone down well with the Hoops support.

One aspect that has particularly upset the support has been the club’s recruitment policy so far this summer. The club have failed to make as many signings as many fans have wanted.

However, former Celtic legend Chris Sutton may have some good news on that front. According to Sutton, the Hoops are close to completing a deal to sign Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling.

“I think Celtic are going to make a signing. Just going to give you a bit of news, I think Celtic are going to sign the Rosenborg left back. Meling. We’re nearly there” he said whilst appearing on BT Sport, as cited by the Daily Record.

Another signing would be welcomed by the Hoops support at this time. Particularly if it meant that Callum McGregor never had to play left-back again.

Timing of move is interesting

What is interesting about Sutton’s comments is the timing of them. Unlike Celtic, Rosenborg have made the Champions League play-off rounds. They will play Dinamo Zagreb for a place in the group stages.

It does seem a bit odd that they would sell one of their key men ahead of such important fixtures. Only time will tell if the Hoops get the deal done as quickly as Sutton suggests. It would be a bonus for Celtic if they did.
