Celtic are once again in a position where they need to deal with the fall-out of another subpar performance under Brendan Rodgers.

This time around, Kilmarnock were the beneficiary of the Bhoys turning in a floundering performance at Parkhead, which ended with David Watson cancelling out Kyogo Furuhashi’s opener in stoppage time to ensure the points were shared.

Rodgers’ men have now dropped points in the Scottish Premiership on seven occasions this term, telling its own story regarding his side’s failure to string together consistent domestic performances.

The Irishman may point to the fact Celtic are unbeaten in their last ten matches; nevertheless, that is unlikely to appease supporters, who have seen a noticeable decline in standards at the club since last season.

Of course, the Hoops’ hierarchy and playing staff need to take a shared portion of responsibility, though it is clear Celtic are underperforming across all levels right now.

There is still time to rescue the situation, given there are 12 games to go between now and the end of the season; nevertheless, change on the pitch needs to happen swiftly, starting with a victory over Motherwell at Fir Park next Sunday.

Sutton stated [Sky Sports]: “Let’s get it right – the result didn’t come as a great shock. Celtic have been bang average all season. I know Brendan was talking about the recent form and winning eight of the last nine.

“The wins have papered over the cracks, really. Performances haven’t been there. Celtic aren’t kidding anyone – they aren’t a good team this season.

“Everyone talks about stuff about the board and signings and this moment being a long time in the making. But Brendan Rodgers has to take responsibility. I can’t think of one player this season at Celtic who he has improved and that’s on the manager.

He later added: “The brand of football they are playing is slow and predictable. There isn’t a fear factor at this moment in time. Teams fancy getting a result against them, so the Kilmarnock result wasn’t a great surprise to anyone and that’s it.”

Chris Sutton’s comments on Celtic will resonate with fans

Everyone will have their own opinions on the current situation at Celtic; however, Sutton does make some very valid points on the club’s malaise and why things may have got to this point.

With a Scottish Premiership title at stake, the Bhoys need to hit their stride quickly in order to give themselves a fighting chance of claiming the league trophy.

Livingston await in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup next month, which is another competition that could provide an opportunity for silverware come May.

Rodgers has to get a better tune out of the players at his disposal in the hunt for a domestic double, though we will need to wait and see on that front over the coming weeks.
