The Celtic fans have witnessed some incredible nights in Europe at Celtic Park over the years in the Champions League.
Some of the club’s most iconic moments have come against some of the best teams in Europe in that competition that have left the Celtic fans talking for years.
We all remember Shunsuke Nakamura’s late freekick against Manchester United to send Celtic into the last 16 under Gordon Strachan.
The 2-1 defeat of Barcelona will always be remembered by Celtic fans for generations to come. But it was another game against the Catalan giants that one of Chris Sutton‘s former teammates blew him away under Martin O’Neill.
The night Didier Agathe shackled Ronaldinho at Celtic Park
Sutton faced Barcelona during O’Neill’s tenure a total of four times over his career where he won one, lost one and drew two. Not a record to be sniffed at.
But it was the 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park in 2004 where Sutton scored, that left him full of praise for Didier Agathe’s performance against the La Liga superstars.
Sutton said [World Football Index], “He always had an eye for a bargain. Think of Didier Agathe, who was a 50-grand signing from Hibs.
“He played as a centre-forward prior to joining Celtic, and Martin moulded him into a brilliant right wing-back. He never gave Ronaldinho a kick when he came to Celtic Park and played well in the Champions League games.
“My memories of Celtic are permanently at the forefront of my mind, and those big European nights were really special. I loved my time there and playing under Martin.”
As every Celtic will remember, this was the night Henrik Larsson returned to Celtic Park after joining Barcelona for free that summer after leaving the Bhoys.
The La Liga club were knocked out in the last 16 as Celtic finished bottom of the group that season with five points but it seems that Agathe’s performance will live long in the memory of Sutton.
