Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton knows all about making a good start with a new club. He did score the winning goal on his Hoops debut back in 2000, in a 2-1 win over Dundee United.
Now he has called on recent Celtic signing Patryk Klimala to get his Hoops career off to a similar start. His reasoning for that – the player needs to help Odsonne Edouard.
“Not have a settling-in period”
“Patryk Klimala was the first one in the door and the Polish star will not have a settling-in period” Sutton said, writing in his Daily Record column.
“Whether he likes it or not, he’s going to have to hit the ground sprinting because Edouard can’t keep carrying the entire load with the sheer volume of games which are coming up thick and fast” Sutton concluded.
Klimala will be aware of what is expected of him at Celtic Park. He will know that his performance at Celtic will be judged on the number of goals he scores.
Player will be expected to contribute fast
Celtic didn’t spend £3.5 million on a player so he could spend time on the bench, he will be expected to contribute fast.
That is why it will be a bonus for the player if he features against Partick Thistle in the Scottish Cup on Saturday evening.
A goal in that game could kickstart his Celtic career similarly to how Sutton started his.
As Sutton comments, Celtic have long needed a striker to help out Odsonne Edouard. The other striker at the club haven’t been anywhere near as effective as the Frenchman.
Klimala will hopefully be the player who can start when Edouard needs to be rested and find the back of the net.
There will be pressure on him to get his Hoops career off to a good start, but that is what you have to deal with at a club like Celtic.
