Chris Sutton pokes fun at BBC pundit’s ‘toe to toe’ Celtic comments

Yesterday evening, my colleague John McGinley rightly took issue with former Rangers striker, now BBC pundit, Kenny Miller’s bizarre take on Michael Beale’s win record since taking over at Ibrox compared to Ange Postecoglou’s at Celtic.

Miller said that Rangers can take solace in the fact that Beale has gone ‘toe to toe’ with Celtic over the last 20 league games and that they have amassed more points than Ange Postecoglou’s side over that period.

I won’t go over old ground so you can read John’s brilliant take on those comments here.

But for now, and let’s be honest, we were all expecting this, let’s enjoy Chris Sutton’s response to Miller’s statement. The former Celtic striker pulled no punches as he picked Miller’s comments apart with some brutally honest facts.

Sutton tweeted, “Toe to toe= drew league game that really mattered at home, lost League Cup final, lost Scottish Cup semi-final, lost league game that really really mattered … won meaningless dead rubber… everyone’s toe to toe is different in fairness to Kenny🤣🤣”

Candid, frank and quite simply brilliant from Sutton. Because he seems to be the only one willing to highlight the fact that when it really came down to it, when Celtic really needed to pull out a win or get a result, Ange Postecoglou’s side always pulled it off.

Rangers didn’t. They capitulated and collapsed as soon as the pressure was cranked up a notch.

Whilst they deserve recognition for their 3-0 win against Celtic at Ibrox, they shouldn’t get too carried away. In terms of the destination of the league title, the result didn’t really matter. All it did was offer a confidence to a Rangers side that had been, up until that point, completely dominated by Celtic this season.

However, as John alluded to in his article yesterday. Let them have the ‘Toe to Toe’ Cup. We will focus on the trophies that matter. And that will continue in June by going for a potential world record eighth domestic treble.
