Chris Sutton took to social media in the aftermath of Celtic’s 1-0 win over Riga in the Europa League. Celtic weren’t at their best in the game, it took a 90th minute goal from Mohamed Elyounoussi to secure the win.

Sutton’s verdict after the game was fairly blunt.

“Thank God for Elyounoussi” was his verdict on the game.

It was all about getting through to the play-off round for Celtic. The performance wasn’t the best, but it was always going to be a hard game against a team who have a good record at home.

Manager’s change paid off

Neil Lennon’s change worked in the end. He put Elyounossi up-front in place of Odsonne Edouard, which might not have been what every fan would have decided to do.

However, it worked, and Celtic scraped their way into the play-off round. Celtic have yet to really perform this season, with a few exceptions.

The squad that is being built allows you to have the luxury of bringing a player like Elyounoussi off the bench. That is a move that many managers would love to make.

Still, Celtic might not be playing well, but the team has recovered well from the loss to Ferencvaros in the Champions League qualifiers.

That would have been the end of many a team’s confidence. However, Celtic have responded well with a run of victories.

Performances need to improve

The performances will need to improve though. For example, against Hibernian on Sunday it could be a hard game unless Celtic up their game.

You have to think that Lennon will make a few changes for the game, he’ll likely start Albian Ajeti for example. Jeremie Frimpong and Elyounoussi will likely come in to the manager’s thoughts after their performances as well.

Still, as Sutton knows well, at the moment for Celtic it is all about winning. Performances can take a back seat as Neil Lennon looks for his best team at the start of a unique season.
