Celtic legend Chris Sutton has delivered his verdict on the Hoops’ performance in their final Europa League group stage game against Cluj.
The Hoops lost 2-0, but the game didn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things as the Hoops had already won Group E.
Sutton singled out debutant Scott Robertson for his performance in the game. The midfielder, who is only 18, didn’t look out of place in the match.
Sutton commented about Robertson on Twitter following the Hoops defeat.
“Proud moment”
“Proud moment for Scott Robertson, well done to him on his debut” he said.
Celtic’s performance wasn’t the best, which doesn’t come as a surprise as the Hoops didn’t pick their strongest side.
However, you can’t really be too harsh on the team, as the group had been won with a game to spare. Very few people would have predicted that outcome when the draw was made.
Hoops didn’t create many chances
Celtic didn’t really create many chances in the first-half, the closest effort on goal a nice run and shot from Mikey Johnston which deflected just past the post.
Cluj had created the better chances though, and it was no surprise to see them take the lead early in the second-half thanks to an Andrei Burca header.
Celtic found it difficult to create chances in the game, as Cluj were dominant in a game which mattered more to them than the Hoops.
The game was killed off as a contest in the 70th minute, as a close range half-volley by Damjan Djokovic made it 2-0.
Neil Lennon won’t be too down-hearted about the performance though, as it was a very experimental side that was selected by the Hoops boss.
Probably the most interesting thing to happen in the game was the second-half appearance from Karamoko Dembele.
It is unfortunate that Celtic’s 12 game unbeaten run came to an end, but there is nothing to really get concerned about.
Celtic should now forget about this game, and focus on Sunday’s league game against Hibs. That match is far more important the Cluj match.
