Celtic’s League Cup win over Rangers is likely to be talked about all week as the celebrating continues in the east end of Glasgow.
Celtic overcame a dogged Rangers after both teams ended the regulation 90 minutes on a 3-3 draw. Extra time failed to produce a winner and it was left up to a penalty shootout to decide who got to take the League Cup home from Hampden.
After Kasper Schmeichel saved Rangers’ third penalty that gave Daizen Maeda the opportunity to seal Celtic’s win.
The Japanese winger didn’t miss from 12 yards and the League Cup now rests in the Celtic Park trophy cabinet.
But the penalty win sparked a debate between Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage as the former wasn’t convinced about Celtic holding their nerve over Rangers.
Chris Sutton hails Celtic’s ‘unbelievable’ League Cup win vs Rangers
Speaking after the match on BBC 606 [34m], Chris Sutton praised Celtic’s win and hailed beating Rangers at Hampden as ‘unbelievable’.
Sutton: “Oh, well, I tell you what, Rob, what’s been sensational? Angeball in this first half at Southampton, but also Brendan Ball north of the border.
“Glasgow Celtic, yet another trophy for Celtic under Brendan Rodgers, Rob. Serial winners.
“They’ve been unbelievable this season. They could be invincible, could be treble winners. Take your hat off, Rob, to Glasgow Celtic and the way that they’re performing this season.
“Doing well in the Champions League, got a chance there of qualifying. That’s pretty sensational, isn’t it, Rob?”
With 119 trophies to their name, Celtic have been relentless this century as they continue to dominate Scottish football.
But Robbie Savage wasn’t convinced by Celtic’s penalty win.

Not having Sutton’s praise of Celtic beating Rangers, Savage tried to turn the tables on the historic victory by downplaying the penalty win.
Savage: “They drew 3-3, Chris, in 120 minutes, against, you hammer Rangers, week in, week out. They drew 3-3 after 120 minutes. They won on penalties.”
Sutton: “Hang on a minute!”
Savage: “A lottery. A lottery. A lottery.”
Sutton: “Rob it’s a win. It’s a cup win, a League Cup win, the first one of the season. Well done Brendan Rodgers. Why not just say it?”
Indeed, Savage didn’t say it but Celtic fans won’t care. All that matters is that the League Cup is sitting pretty in the Parkhead trophy cabinet as Celtic officially becomes the most successful team in Scotland.
In the cold light of day, although this final will be spoken about by Celtic and Rangers fans for years, it won’t really matter to the history books how the League Cup was won.
All that matters is that Celtic have the trophy and Rangers now need to figure out exactly what it is they need to do to beat the Parkhead club in a meaningful game moving forward.
