Martin O’Neill is doing what he does best in the Celtic dugout, and that’s shine the club in a great light.

When Brendan Rodgers left Celtic last Monday evening, there was a dark cloud hovering above the club, including that incredible statement from Dermot Desmond.

But within a week, Martin O’Neill has changed it all around, and that was proven on Sunday as Celtic beat Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

As a result of this fresh lease of life being installed into Celtic, the calls for O’Neill to be given the full-time gig have grown, and Chris Sutton has shared his thoughts.

Should Martin O’Neill become Celtic’s next full-time manager?

Despite all the noise around O’Neill, and calls for him to replace Rodgers increasing, Sutton is unsure about it happening.

Speaking on the BBC’s 606 programme, Sutton noted how Celtic fans he hears and speaks to only see O’Neill and Shaun Maloney coming in as ‘short-term fillers.’

Plus, the former striker wanted to note the two matches Celtic have played, against a Falkirk side they should be beating, and a ‘pretty rank’ Rangers team.

“I think he said that he only wanted the job short-term,” responded Sutton on the chances of O’Neill getting the full-time gig.

“There are Celtic fans out there. I follow a lot of Celtic fans and what they say. They say, with Martin and Shaun Maloney, it should be short-term and as fillers.

“But with respect, Celtic have beaten Falkirk, which they should do at home and beat them comfortably. Beat them well. It was important for Martin to get off to that start, and then beat a Rangers team who have been pretty rank all season.

“Is that something to get over-excited about?”

What the stats say about O’Neill’s first two games in charge

Yes, it’s only been two matches, but it wasn’t so long ago that Celtic were losing to Dundee, and deservedly so.

The fact of the matter is that the team have been nowhere near it for months, and O’Neill has come in and changed it all on its head.

That’s been proven by just how expressive, direct and fresh Celtic have looked going forward in their two games under O’Neill.
