Chris Sutton has praised Celtic striking sensation Odsonne Edouard but aired one criticism – that he doesn’t score enough headed goals.

The Englishman admitted that he was being “slightly picky” when bringing up the fault in Edouard’s game. Sutton also praised the Frenchman’s recent form that has seen him score eight goals in his last six games for club and country, and said that he is a “top talent”.

“I’ve been so impressed with the way Edouard is progressing as a striker,” Sutton told the Scottish Sun.

“I think he’s a fantastic all-rounder. Some of his hold-up and link up play this season has been sensational. We can see that he’s a very natural finisher.

“The only criticism of Edouard at this moment is that inability to score an abundance of headed goals.

“But that’s being slightly picky — because he’s developing into a really top talent.”

Sutton could have a point with Edouard

Not many people would have been criticising Edouard’s heading ability when he nodded in our equaliser against Kilmarnock at the weekend. The forward rose terrificly well to steer James Forrest’s cross into the net in a goal that showed he can do virtually anything.

But, to be fair to Sutton, his headed goals have been few and far between. Edouard’s former teammate Moussa Dembele liked to weigh in with a few goals with his head and it is one part of the game in which they differ slightly.

However, Edouard isn’t likely to come in for any criticism from the Celtic support at present. We are just delighted to be watching him mature into the player that he is. Edouard will be a top European striker for club and country in the years to come and we’ll be able to say we saw him turn from a boy into a man.

Maybe that development will included scoring more headed goals, just to silence Sutton.
