Chris Sutton rinses Gerrard record; claims Ange has already surpassed him with Celtic
Chris Sutton has stated his belief that Ange Postecoglou has already surpassed Steven Gerrard in terms of achievements in Scottish football.
The Celtic boss is celebrating an incredible title win with the Hoops after last night’s 1-1 draw at Tannadice. The result ensures that the Hoops won the competition at the first time of asking whilst securing a league and cup double in Ange’s debut season.
Indeed, Celtic wrapped up the Premier Sports Cup back in December to make it 2 trophy wins within a year of taking up the job for Postecoglou.
And Sutton believes that already makes him more of a success than Gerrard, who only managed 1 trophy in 3 years at Rangers before being offered a job in the Premier League.
Speaking on a special Optus Sport podcast, Sutton said: “I don’t get the argument that he can’t manage in the Premier League. You look at his track record – his track record speaks for itself and I think people would’ve sat up and noticed the job that he’s done at Celtic.
“Steven Gerrard with one trophy out of nine in three seasons and people are saying it’s an incredible turnaround. Well, it’s nowhere near to what Ange has done at Celtic in one season. Ange has won more trophies in one season than Steven Gerrard in three and Gerrard gets a big job at Aston Villa. I’m sure clubs would look at him [Ange]. It’s actually insulting [to suggest he can’t manage in the EPL]. He’s managed a national team at a World Cup. What more does he have to do?
“And as I say – Steven Gerrard did build a Rangers team and did do well, but you can’t compare the two achievements between Postecoglou and Gerrard. Yet we’re sitting here questioning whether Postecoglou could manage in the Premier League but of course Steven Gerrard was destined to do that? That doesn’t make any sense to me.”
Chris Sutton gets it spot on as highlights Ange Celtic impact
Dragging up Gerrard’s time at Rangers isn’t something we like to focus on too much. However, this is a great point made by Sutton which deserves to be highlighted.
Gerrard had apparently turned Scottish football around up here. Many discussed how he had managed to change the pendulum of power in Glasgow. There was this idea he left some sort of successful blueprint up here.
Yet it took him 3 years to win a single trophy. He didn’t even manage to win a cup competition during his time up here either. Not to mention the Aston Villa boss went 2 years without actually winning anything. Would Ange have gotten a similar timescale to make an impact? Unlikely.
Sutton is spot on to say that Postecoglou has done more than Gerrard. He’s won more competitions, and that’s all that matters in Glasgow. The more trophies you have in the bank, the bigger the hero you are up here.
Goodness knows how many trophies the Celtic boss will have in his locker when it’s all said and done. The early signs are that it’ll be a lot more than 2.
When the day comes for Postecoglou to depart the club, chances are he’ll be an icon. But unlike Gerrard, he’ll likely have a big trophy haul to look back on.
