Celtic legend Chris Sutton gave an instant verdict to the Hoops’ 2-2 draw with Lille in the Europa League group stages.
Despite going two-nil up at half-time thanks to two Mohamed Elyounoussi goals, the Hoops were pegged back in the second-half, and were left with a point in the draw. However, after some poor recent displays this was much better by Celtic. Sutton was quick to focus on that, and how Neil Lennon has got his team coming back t0 where they want to be.
“Proud of that performance”
“Mixed emotions for Celtic after letting a two goal lead slip. Bottom line is Neil Lennon looked like he had his Celtic team back tonight. Brave, gutsy, yes mistakes still being made but Celtic can be proud of that performance tonight… Elyounoussi best game in a Celtic jersey” Sutton said, on his Twitter account.
Before the game most Celtic fans would probably have been pleased to gain a point in France after some disappointing performances.
However, there will probably be some frustration as the Hoops did blow a chance to get a great three points. When all is said and done though, it was a much improved performance from the team.
It was a battling, determined performance, and as Sutton says, Mo Elyounoussi in particular stood out with his two-goal salvo.
Best Hoops display in weeks
As Sutton says though, the bottom line is that Celtic played much better than perhaps many would have predicted.
On the back of the poor performances against Rangers, Milan and Aberdeen, it was always going to be a tough task for Celtic to get the win. However, a point is a more than creditable result.
Neil Lennon and his Celtic players shouldn’t be too down-hearted about the result. Hopefully the side will instead use the performance as something to build on, starting against Aberdeen at Hampden on Sunday.
With the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Nir Bitton making their return against Lille, the Celtic squad is looking good again. Now hopefully the performances will follow in that direction.
