Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has responded in typical fashion to claims made by Dave King. The Daily Record ran quotes from the Rangers chairman speaking to the Gers fans who snapped up a record number of season tickets.
King said: “You have set a new high and I am immensely proud to be chairman of this great club. Let’s continue to do the right things and project Rangers as the country’s premier club and again, thank you for your wonderful support.”
And it was the second sentence of King’s spiel that BT Sport pundit Sutton flagged up. He took the Gers boss to task over his use of the phrase “premier club”.
King is playing up to the Rangers support
It really is no surprise to see Sutton get involved in another social media feud. The former Hoops striker loves being opinionated and playing up to the Celtic support at the expense of our rivals.
Of course he is right. Rangers cannot be considered as Scotland’s premier club when they haven’t won a major trophy since 2011. In that time Celtic have won 17 domestic honours including eight straight titles. We have lost just twice (in 90 minutes) to the Ibrox side since then, and beaten them 12 times.
Added to that, we’ve played European group stage football in each of the last seven seasons compared to Rangers’ one year. Our season ticket sales also dwarf the Ibrox side’s numbers despite them being a record.
King is obviously playing up to the Rangers support but he would be better advised to let his team do their talking on the pitch. The Ibrox club have been the pre-season champions for the past four seasons, but it’s been Celtic lifting the trophy above their head when it actually matters.
