Chris Sutton tells Ange Postecoglou what his next step for Celtic is

Celtic under Ange Postecoglou have been imperious over the last two seasons. With two league cups, a second title almost in the bag and the potential of a treble, this team have certainly stamped their domestic authority over the Scottish game.

But if Ange does manage to pull off another treble for Celtic, where does the manager take us next? Chris Sutton has the answer, and it’s one that we are all sure will happen next next season.

Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Sutton said, “When Martin O’Neill came in, the big turnaround in terms of the points deficit, winning the league was crucially important.

“I think the first season when we got knocked out by Bordeaux. And then the second season we got into the Champions League.

“Then the expectation did arise and we actually performed pretty well. Our away form was wretched but our home form was really good.

“Then with that comes the expectation. I think from Ange Postecoglou’s point of view, he’s had a couple of really successful seasons.

“But that is the next step. I think there would have been a disappointment from within the club.

“Certainly we talked about Rangers having the worst Champions League record ever, Celtic didn’t cover themselves in glory.

“They wanted to bloody a few team’s noses in the competition and had the spells within those games, but I think that’s the next step for Ange Postecoglou.”

Ange is building this Celtic side with Europe in mind

There is no doubt Ange has his sights in Europe. He has been consistent in his view that he wants to take the club and build it’s European pedigree ever since he became the manager.

In his first season, after defeating Ferencvaros in the Europa League, Ange said his vision was to get the rest of Europe talking about his teams football, not just the results.

And he managed just that in the Champions League. The only thing missing was that we just didn’t get the results that matched performances against Real Madrid and RB Leipzig.

Draws against Shakhtar Donetsk were admirable, but not enough to see us get through the group stages.

Next season will be the marker. With two full seasons under his belt, Ange will have built a team that he believes can do the job for us in Europe. And that is something I cannot wait to see.
