Chris Sutton wants Mikey Johnston to start for Celtic in Glasgow derby
Celtic legend Chris Sutton has named a player that he wants to see start for the Hoops in Sunday’s Glasgow derby against Rangers. That player is winger Mikey Johnston. The reason he wants to see Johnston start – he believes that the player can expose Rangers defender James Tavernier with his skills.
“I think Tavernier is the weak link, or one of the weak links at the back for Rangers, I’d like to see Mikey Johnston up against him” he said, whilst appearing on BT Sport.
There is no doubt that Tavernier has struggled at times in the last against Celtic. Who can forget his assist for the Hoops’ winning goal in the 2-1 victory last season?
Has mostly been on bench in recent weeks
However, there has to be some debate about Mikey Johnston starting the game. Since returning from injury, he has only started one game for the Hoops, the 2-0 loss to Cluj.
It should be remembered though, that he was excellent in the 2-0 win over Rangers back in September. He played with a fearlessness that would have impressed Neil Lennon.
If a prediction was to be made though, you would imagine that Johnston will start the game on the bench and come on in the second-half, like he has been doing recently for the Hoops.
Probably won’t make starting line-up
Celtic have been starting Ryan Christie and James Forrest on the wing in recent weeks, and that probably won’t change for the derby.
There is no doubt that Johnston can make an impression on the game though, even if that is off the bench. He might well get his chance to run at Tavernier as Sutton wants to see happen. Perhaps in the later stages of the game, the Hoops winger will be able to take advantage of any errors by the Rangers man. That remains to be seen, but Johnston can play a part in a potential Hoops win even if he doesn’t start the game.
