Chris Sutton wants to see Fraser Forster return to Celtic

Former Celtic legend Chris Sutton has revealed that he would like to see the club sign a new goalkeeper. The player he has earmarked for the job is former Hoops goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Sutton feels that the former title winner at Celtic can replace Scott Bain, who he does not seem to be a fan of, and who he felt unimpressed in the 4-3 loss to Cluj.

“Scott Bain’s goalkeeping for the third goal proved what I’ve been saying for ages. Celtic need a better keeper and Fraser Forster is available” Sutton said, as reported by the Daily Record.

“The sight of Bain kicking a free-kick away from 30 yards in the first half helped to unsettle everyone.”

It is all well and good calling for the return of Forster. In his time, he was a great goalkeeper for Celtic. He even set a new Scottish league record for minutes without conceding a goal.

Hardly played last season

However, that was in the past. His career has stagnated badly recently at Southampton. Last season he played only one game for the Saints.

He might not be the same dominant goalkeeper he was at Celtic back during Neil Lennon’s first spell as manager.

Maybe if he was available on a free transfer he would be worth signing. However, his contract with Southampton runs until 2022. Therefore, the Saints will be looking for good money for the player.

Forster is only 31, and he still has a few good years of his career left to run. If Celtic can afford him, perhaps they should move for Forster, but it would be a gamble.
