‘Be careful’ – Chris Sutton warns Robbie Savage about Celtic claim after Aston Villa’s Champions League exit

Celtic had immense success in this seasons Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers created history and took Celtic out of the group phase of the new-look Champions League for the first time since 2013.

Beating the likes of Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and Celtic earning a draw against Atalanta set the Hoops up for a glamour knock-out tie against Bayern Munich in which Rodgers was moments away from creating more history with a win in Germany.

With Celtic leading Bayern 1-0 with seconds to go in Germany, extra-time looked on the cards until Alphonso Davies popped up with a last-gasp equaliser to send the Hoops out of the competition 2-1 on aggregate.

Whilst the vast majority of Celtic supporters will see getting out of the group as a success, Chris Sutton has to put Robbie Savage straight once again after he ‘misquoted’ the Hoops legend’s verdict on the defeat in Munich.

Sutton puts Savage straight on Celtic’s Champions League performance vs Bayern Munich

Discussing Aston Villa’s defeat to PSG with a Villa fan, Savage seemed as if he was mocking Celtic’s UEFA Cup run in 2003 by asking the supporter if they will be commemorating their Champions League campaign with a ‘Road to Munich’ tribute.

Sutton was having none of that and then had to correct Savage on his claim about Celtic’s defeat in Munich where he ‘misquoted’ the Hoops hero.

Speaking to a Vill fan, Savage said on BBC 606 [18m], “So will you be having The road to Munich, like Celtic had the Road to Seville?

Sutton replied, “Yeah, but Tony [Villa fan], I don’t agree with the way you see it in terms of it being a huge success, but I get your pride in the performance.

Savage: “Well, you said Celtic losing to Bayern was a success. Make your mind up.”

Sutton: “No, I talked about Celtic qualifying, Rob.

Savage: “You said it was a great day. You lost to Bayern.

Sutton: “Once again, you’re misquoting me. You’re going to have to be careful, Rob.”

Celtic’s superb Champions League campaign vs Man City

What Savage fails to realise is that with the limited resources Celtic have, qualification from the group stage will be viewed as a big achievement for the Scottish giants.

So with that in mind, let’s take a look back and remind Savage how well Celtic did and how Rodgers’ side compared against the billionaire Saudi-owned club Man City.

• Celtic beat Slovan Bratislava [5-1], Young Boys [1-0] and RB Leipzig [3-1] and earned draws against Atalanta [0-0], Dinamo Zagreb [0-0] and Club Brugge [1-1].

• Man City beat Slovan Bratislava [0-4], Sparta Prague [5-0] and Club Brugge [3-1] and earned draws against Inter Milan [0-0] and Feyenoord [3-3].
• Celtic lost one less game than Man City to finish above the Premier League club in 21st place on 12 points.
• Man City lost one more game than Celtic to end the league phase in 22nd place.
• Celtic spent roughly £30m before the Champions League campaign started compared to Man City’s £200m+ outlay

Whilst being knocked out of the competition won’t be regarded as being successful, Celtic fans will take great pride in how their team stood up to some of the best teams in Europe and held their own.
