Chris Sutton’s brilliant response to ‘pub team’ jibe after bigging up Celtic during Manchester United debate

Chris Sutton watched Celtic outclass Motherwell on Sunday to return to the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

It was a performance of high class and efficiency from Brendan Rodgers’ men after Celtic’s impressive display against Atalanta in the Champions League.

But, of course, regardless of what team you are or league you play in, everything you do will now be overshadowed by Manchester United sacking Erik ten Hag on Monday.

That’s the nature of media, unfortunately, especially in England, with ten Hag’s final game being a 2-1 defeat at West Ham United.

In that match, the London club scored a stoppage-time penalty – through Jarrod Bowen – to win the match, but there was controversy surrounding it.

It was adjudged that Matthias de Ligt fouled Danny Ings in the area, even after a check from VAR, with Celtic hero Sutton agreeing with the call.

The former striker was relaying that information on the radio, before he put a supporter straight for his ‘disrespectful’ comments.

Chris Sutton slams jibe Celtic played against ‘pub team’ Motherwell

There aren’t many English pundits, other than Sutton, who watch or have so much knowledge of Scottish football.

Whether it be his own team Celtic or even a team further down the table like Rangers, his knowledge stretches far and wide.

When Sutton stated that he felt it was the right call to award West Ham a penalty against Manchester United, he was told that he has been watching ‘too much Scottish football’ and how Celtic faced a ‘pub team’ at the weekend.

But, as per, his response was just perfect, as he told BBC 606.

“If you can sit there and say that is a penalty, then you have been watching too much Scottish football,” said the Manchester United fan.

Sutton responded: “I was actually watching Celtic play Motherwell off the park.” To which the fan responded, “Pub team, aren’t they, Motherwell?”

Sutton added: “Are they?! I think that’s a little disrespectful. Imagine if Motherwell had £600 million to spend, Do you think they would make such a mess of It like Manchester United have?! I don’t think they would.”

Celtic’s net spend compared to English Premier League teams

At the end of the day, the game has become all about money, just look at Manchester City and Chelsea’s rise since the turn of the century, it wouldn’t have happened without the dough.

If Celtic had just half of the money those in England have, then they would be unstoppable of the highest order.

Going back to 2023, Celtic’s net spend during the five-year period was a mere £6.74m, according to Glasgow World.

To put that into context, Chelsea, surprise, surprise, sits top of the list, with an incredible net spend of £675.21m, with Manchester United in second and also above the £600 million mark, and Arsenal third on £553.76m.

This is why the champions have to be clever in the market, just look at how Celtic purchased and then sold Matt O’Riley, it’s a work of genius and an example of how to perfectly work the market.
