Celtic centre-back Christopher Jullien believes that the Hoops can go far in the Europa League. He has even gone as far as to say that the Hoops winning the competition is not out of the question.

“Why not?,” he said as reported by the Scotsman. “I said it before we played the first match in the group – why not?”

“We can believe”

“We can believe it is possible because we have the squad, we have the players, and we have the mentality to go all the way. It would be amazing, for sure, for the club to do it.”

It is good to see that the player has so much confidence in his team-mates. However, history does not favour the Hoops as they have not reached a European final since 2003.

However, this current Celtic side has not been afraid of making history. Many of the players that currently play for the Hoops were involved in the unbeaten domestic season of 2016-17.

More recently, the Hoops won in Italy for the first time ever, defeating Lazio 2-1. The win over Lazio was even more significant is it booked the Hoops place in the last 32 of the Europa League. That is a remarkable feat when there are still two group stage matches to go.

That win in Lazio should give the Hoops plenty of confidence going forward in the competition. There is no real reason why that win cannot be replicated in the later stages of the tournament.

Of course, the Europa League will get tougher in the last 32 when teams from the Champions League drop into the competition.

However, as Jullien says, the Celtic players will have taken a lot from their results in the Europa League so far. Hopefully that will continue against Rennes on Thursday when the Hoops aim for a win which could see them go a long way to finishing first in the Europa League Group E.
