Class Postecoglou comments as he once again lifts lid on relationship with Celtic CEO Nicholson

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has once again lauded CEO Michael Nicholson and the working relationship that is helping turn the Bhoys around.

Celtic’s board and executive team have hardly been the most popular people at the club over the last 18 months. Many supporters have made their feelings clear on those in charge and the failure to win ten-in-a-row. Back the team, sack the board has become a familiar motto for some.

At this point, sins of the past are water under the bridge and the focus is entirely on Celtic’s future.

As always, we wouldn’t expect Postecoglou to criticise his bosses in the media, but the wholehearted nature in which he describes his relationship with Nicholson, in particular, comes across as genuine.

As quoted by The Scotsman today, the Celtic manager said: “I was working with Michael on transfers in the summer when he was very involved. The key thing for me is the club are supporting my vision for the club, and as a manager that’s what you need. I’m the one the responsibility lies with in the football department. The buck stops with me.

“My best chance of success is if the club supports my vision and that’s what the club is doing. Michael has been very good about making sure the plans I want to put in place are slowly getting there. It’s not a short term thing. We want to build a really strong foundation for the club on and off the field.

“For that to happen there is no chance I can do it on my own. I need good people around me and Michael leads that. It’s an important relationship because I don’t have the money to do it. My bank account is nowhere near big enough to do the business I’ve been doing.

“Like every manager around the world, we don’t work in isolation. We are part of a bigger organisation. It’s not just Michael, it’s the whole football club.”

It really sounds like behind-the-scenes that Postecoglou and Celtic have resolved to build a long-term project. The Australian is here for the long haul, certainly well beyond this season.

This planning is all very promising. If the club is aligned with the manager, who himself is looking to shake things up in Scottish football, it can only mean success down the line. And there’s still a chance of great success in his first campaign.
