When the Europa League draw was made, some Celtic fans will have put Cluj down as a six pointer.
The pair had met earlier in the season in Champions League qualifying. A Romanian comeback saw the hosts defeated at Parkhead and Dan Petrescu’s men go through.
Despite the disappointment, many fans believed it was an opportunity lost.
Are Celtic right to be growing in confidence for Cluj Europa League tie?
The ‘next goal is the winner’ face off at Celtic Park was a freak result.
By the 3-3 point, the Hoops had pushed everyone up and the fourth goal was predictable.
Fans are eagerly waiting on the Cluj matches in the Europa League for some revenge time.
But, Cluj are ripping up the group’s script by beating Lazio at home on match day one. A penalty from Ciprian Deac before half time and a 75 minute winner by Billel Omrani sealed the shock win.
Cluj are sitting top of the group going into the rematch at Parkhead next month.
This is going to be a mighty showdown but a game that will now be scaring more Celtic fans due to the Lazio result.
The players must be wary that Cluj have something to defend and grit in their teeth.
Hoops must execute game plan correctly
One thing in Neil Lennon and co’s favour is that they haven’t lost since the Cluj defeat. A run that includes three European games as well as sitting pretty at the top of the Premiership.
Plus, the squad has improved with the acquisition of Fraser Forster and Mohammed Elyounoussi.
Christopher Jullien is also improving, as is Boli Bolingoli, since the last round of matches against them.
Celtic seem better prepared this time and there should be no surprises when it comes to the Romanians.
Lennon knows their strengths and weaknesses, now let’s see if the team have learned their lesson and go top of the Europa League group.
