Cluj to be backed by small support at Celtic Park

It seems like the prospect of a raucous Celtic Park on a European night hasn’t caught everyone’s imagination. Not the majority of the Cluj fanbase anyway.

The Romanian champions arrive in Glasgow as Europa League Group E’s only team with a 100% win record. They’ll fancy their chances of adding another three points to their tally on Thursday night – especially after winning in the East End just last month.

But Dan Petrescu’s men will have to do it while being backed by as little as 200 away supporters. The miniscule Romanian following was confirmed by Celtic FC SLO John Paul Taylor on Tuesday afternoon.

Celtic Park will be rocking for Cluj visit

So not too many Cluj fans will be in place for the 8pm kick-off. But there’s a good chance they would have failed to make themselves heard anyway.

That’s because it’s shaping up to be another memorable night at Paradise as Neil Lennon’s side aim for some sweet revenge. The Celtic ticket website shows just single tickets available for the match, suggesting that the stadium is going to be close to a sell-out for the clash.

All three of our home Europa League group stage clashes last year were pretty memorable, for varying reasons, and they were all virtual sell-outs.

UEFA’s secondary competition may lack some of the glitz and glamour of the Champions League but it matters every bit as much to the Celtic support. They, and the players, will know that the game gives them a perfect opportunity to set themselves up with a real chance of making the last 32 of the competition.

Parkhead is likely to be rocking, with pretty much all the pre-match noise coming from the home support. Hopefully it’s the same at full-time.
