The prospect of Ben Davies moving to Celtic is now officially over after the player joined Sheffield United yesterday.
Davies was linked with a move to Parkhead earlier this summer [Daily Mail]. That came after Celtic were beaten to the player’s signature by Liverpool back on transfer deadline day in January.

And as the Hoops looked to move for him a second time, Davies and Liverpool have instead struck agreements with Championship side Sheffield United.
Davies will spend the season on loan at Bramall Lane before heading back to Merseyside in the summer. Celtic, meanwhile, have added Carl Starfelt to their centre-back ranks yet still need one more in.
But it won’t be Davies. During the height of the speculation linking him with Parkhead, Davies reportedly didn’t want to leave Liverpool [The Mirror].
Ben Davies joins Sheffield United; ends up back where he was with Preston
It’s a touch frustrating for Celtic to see Davies join Sheffield United so quickly. After all, whenever we were interested in taking him it looked as though he was happy to give us the cold shoulder.
All he’s really done over the last six to eight months is stall his career. He’s no longer on an upwards trajectory. He finds himself back in the Championship having not played a single minute of action since January.
It shows just how poor a decision it turned out to be from Davies back in January. Moving to Liverpool will always look attractive on paper, but it simply wasn’t thought through.
Davies could’ve been lining up for Celtic in a European qualifier tonight. At the same time, Celtic wouldn’t have had the centre-back issues we’re currently struggling with if we managed to get that deal over the line.
Instead, he’s having to move back down a division to a recently-relegated club to get his career back on track. It’s disappointing for the player and a massive blow for Celtic who would’ve been hoping to lure him to Glasgow this summer.
Unfortunately, Davies has made his decision. And hopefully, he’s had his final chance to move to Parkhead.
