Former Celtic midfielder Barry Robson will take interim charge of Aberdeen following the sacking of Stephen Glass this morning, the Pittodrie club has announced.

An Aberdeen statement confirmed both Robson and Celtic icon Scott Brown will be part of the coaching team.

The club said: “Led by Barry Robson, who will step up from his role with the U18s, the coaching team will comprise of Neil Simpson, Scott Anderson and team captain, Scott Brown.

“The interim coaching staff will hold their first training session with the playing squad tomorrow as they prepare for the visit of St Johnstone to Pittodrie in the cinch Premiership. The recruitment process for a new management team has now commenced. An update will be communicated in due course, but for now, everyone at the Club is fully focussed on the important match on Tuesday evening.”

Robson has been part of the coaching staff at the Dons since his retirement in 2016, so knows his way around Pittodrie. That came after a three-year playing spell at the club.

Brown knows Robson well too, of course, given they are former Celtic teammates.

Robson joined the Bhoys in January 2008, playing a pivotal role in an exciting title run-in against Rangers. Many would argue he was one of the most important players of that frantic few months.

His performances in the derbies against the Ibrox side are fondly recalled to this day. His challenge on Christian Dailly in one of them set the tone for a crucial victory. He made 55 appearances in total for the Bhoys.

Robson and his coaching staff will have their work cut out at the Dons. They’re in a dismal run of form and were knocked out of the Scottish Cup yesterday.

Unless results turn around, they could even be drawn in a surprising relegation fight. Interesting times ahead in the North East!
